School of Rock the musical
Based on the hit comedy film, School of Rock (the musical) brings all the top songs and hilarious jokes to the stage.
Dewey Finn is a struggling rock guitarist who dreams of making it big in the music industry. He finds himself trouble when he is kicked out of his band “No Vacancy” and threatened with eviction if he cannot pay his rent. One morning, he answers a call from Rosalie Mullins, the headmistress of a prestigious private school who is looking for a substitute teacher. Dewey impersonates his roomate Ned and accepts the job, desperate for any type of income.
Dewey shows up to teach but has no idea what to do, much to the surprise of his students. Listening to the students’ music class and impressed by their talent, he starts to form a plan. The Battle of the Bands competition is in three week and Dewey decides to form a rock group with the students and compete. He places the kids in different roles, from drummer to groupie to band manager.
Top Critic Reviews
- “The musical sticks fairly close to Mike White’s screenplay, retaining some of its zingier dialogue, while updating it with references to smartphones and Taylor Swift. Of course, any show that serves up somber preadolescents springing to joyous life via music of their own making is bound to push buttons” – The NewYork Time
- “Zooming beyond Black’s unavoidable manic bluster to something tender and vulnerable, Brightman is a frenzied Pied Piper who turns out to need the kids’ approval more than they need his. And the younger performers don’t disappoint” – Timeout.com
- “A disreputable charmer brings the joy of music to a staid community while stirring up romance with an uptight lady: If the plot of School of Rock sounds like a great musical, that’s because it is” – Vulture.com
- ” minute they launch into ecstatic head-banging, pogoing release, all is forgiven. And the adult ensemble is playfully double- or triple-cast as parents, teachers and rockers, yielding some enjoyment in picking out who’s who, especially among the No Vacancy members.” – Hollywoodreporter.com
- “There is tremendous amount of talent, and a long list of credits, behind School of Rock, the Broadway musical of version of the 2003 Jack Black comedy.” – EntertainmentWeekly.com
- “Andrew Lloyd Webber unleashed his inner child to write the period rock for “School of Rock,” an exuberant feel-good musical based on the beloved 2003 movie starring Jack Black as a wannabe rock musician who puts together a kick-ass band composed of school children.” – Variety.com
- “An audience member shouldn’t feel tempted to plug his ears at a musical, but I had to slap my fingers away from my ears during Dewey’s solo” – Los Angeles Times

The band practice takes over the normal school day but the children start to learn confidence and creativity through the project. The group decides to name itself: “The School of Rock”. Dewey sneaks the band out of school to audition for the Battle of the Bands but unfortunately the roster is full. One of the students convinces the managers that they all have terminal illnesses and out of pity, The School of Rock is allowed a spot in the competition.
Headmistress Mullins checks on Dewey’s progress and tells him there will be a parent’s night at the school the day before the big competition. While Dewey practices for both the band and the parent night, his roomate Ned receives a check from the school and realizes Dewey is impersonating him.
Ned and the police burst in during Dewey’s time at the parent conference and reveal his true identity. Dewey confesses but tries to explain how talented the kids are but ultimately flees the school. The next morning, angry parents surround Mullins and demand answers. During the distraction, the kids sneak away from school to compete in the Battle of the Bands, picking up Dewey along the way. The parents and Mullins rush to the concert, trying to locate the kids. The School of Rock performs an original song and the crowd loves them. Despite losing to Dewey’s former band, School of Rock is cheered for an encore. The parents see how happy and confident the band has made their children and start to enjoy the show. Mullins loosens up and reveals she used to be a wild child as well.
Dewey and Ned ultimately open an afterschool rock band program, continuing to offer music lessons and support but this time without any stolen identities. Full of original hits and heart warming humor, School of Rock is a musical you do not want to miss.
