Based on the popular Disney film Frozen, this musical follows the path of two sisters, Elsa and Anna, princesses in the kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa possesses the magical ability to create ice and snow with her hands, and the two play gleefully together as children, building a snowman with Elsa’s power.

Elsa feels ashamed at her loss of control and feels deeply suspicious of her powers

One evening, the seemingly innocent gift takes a dangerous turn as Elsa accidentally sends an icy wave through Anna and injures her. After Anna is healed, the King and Queen separate the sisters to prevent any similar accidents. Elsa feels ashamed at her loss of control and feels deeply suspicious of her powers. Tragically, both the King and Queen die in a shipwreck while both sisters are still young.

Kept apart in the same castle for the next decade, change finally comes with Elsa’s twenty first birthday. Elsa is destined to be crowned queen and take the throne as the next ruler of Arendelle. For the first time in ten years, visitors are welcome to the castle yet Elsa is anxious
about losing control of her powers again.

While Elsa is worrying, Anna welcomes the opening of the castle gates and the influx of new faces and names. Royal families come from all over the land for the coronation. The ceremony proceeds without any incidents and Elsa talks to Anna for the first time since childhood, but they
quarrel about whether or not to keep the castle open.

Top Critic Reviews

  • “Disney’s ‘Frozen’ opens on Broadway with a warm sister bond — and Elsa gives her all with ‘Let it Go'” – Chicago Tribune
  • “Like the snowy mountains Anna and Kristoff have to scale in order to save the day, Frozen has its ups and downs” – Vulture
  • “And though familiar, it comes across just as groundbreaking here as an audience full of kids and parents cheer on two strong female leads” – People.com
  • “”Frozen” likely won’t have many repeat customers, but its agreeable competence will satisfy hardcore fans who are curious to understand more about the plucky, climate-meddling heroines who devise their own happy ending through sisterly solidarity.” – LA Times
  • “The altogether respectable production devised by the creative team” – Washington Post
  • “Let the expectations go and enjoy the love between two sisters” – NewsDay
  • “Despite its welcomingly melodramatic framing, the song somehow feels smaller than it should” – The Daily Beast

Anna meets the charming Prince Hans of the Southern Isles and the two fall in love. Hans proposes to Anna immediately. Taking their newfound love to Queen Elsa, they ask her permission to marry but she is hesitant to approve of a one day relationship. Anna angrily questions Elsa about her distance over the years and as the argument grows, Elsa accidentally reveals her magical powers in the middle of the castle. Frightened, she flees to the North Mountain, leaving Arendelle trapped in an eternal winter of ice and snow.

Elsa accidentally reveals her magical powers in the middle of the castle

Anna sets off after Elsa, determined to bring her back and to save Arendelle. With the help of an ice cutter named Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and a snowman named Olaf, they travel as a group to Elsa’s hiding place. Meanwhile, Hans sends a search party out for Anna and decides Elsa
should be killed.

Upon reaching the mountain, Anna confronts Elsa and explains Arendelle is frozen. Elsa becomes frightened and angry, unsure if she can fix her mistake and accidentally sends an icy wave into Anna’s heart. Terrified, Elsa sends the entire group away, wondering if she truly is a
monster.

Anna is slowly dying but can be saved by an act of true love. Kristoff rushes to take Anna back to her fiancée Hans, hiding his new feelings of love for her. Yet, on their arrival at the castle, Hans reveals he has actually been plotting to steal Arendelle and kill both Anna and Elsa. He
locks Anna away and captures Elsa. Close to death, Anna is rescued by Olaf the snowman who quickly takes her to Kristoff who reveals his love to her.

Hans confronts Elsa outside the castle and accuses her of trying to destroy all of Arendelle and sentences her to death. Hans claims Elsa accidentally killed Anna, and Elsa crumples with shame and guilt. Anna witnesses Hans about to kill Elsa and leaps in between them, causing
her to become solid ice. Elsa weeps over Anna, thinking she truly is dead. Yet Anna’s sacrifice is the very act of true love needed to save her own life and she begins to thaw. Elsa realizes her power is not something to fear but a gift balanced by love. The two sisters reunite for the first
time in years without fear. Hans is banished from the kingdom and Anna and Kristoff fall in love.

This dynamic tale is full of mischief and comedy, yet sheds light on the power of fear with love as the only force great enough to break it.
