Named after its unlikely protagonist, Aladdin tells the tale of a street urchin in the exotic Arabian city of Agrabah. Aladdin is a boy who has survived by stealing with his group of friends in the busy streets of the city. In the same city, Princess Jasmine faces different challenges as she tries to avoid a marriage arranged by her father, the Sultan. With her birthday quickly approaching, he demands she must marry a noble within the next three days.

He starts to fall in love with Jasmine and shows her his secret hideaway in the city

Jafar, the Sultan’s power hungry chief advisor is disturbed by Jasmine’s upcoming marriage as he plans to usurp the throne for himself. He and his henchman Iago travel to the Cave of Wonders, a site with powerful magic. They try to enter the cave and seize the power to aid their scheme but are blocked from entering. Jafar is shown an image of Aladdin when he asks who can enter the cave. Iago and Jafar return to Agrabah determined to identify and find Aladdin.

Meanwhile, Jasmine decides to escape the palace and experience life as a commoner in the city. Aladdin runs into her but does not recognize her as a princess in her disguise. He starts to fall in love with Jasmine and shows her his secret hideaway in the city. Palace guards recognize Jasmine and arrest Aladdin, believing him to have kidnapped the princess. Jafar saves Aladdin from execution when he recognizes him from the vision at the Cave of Wonders.

Jafar takes Aladdin out of prison and they travel back to the Cave of Wonders. Jafar explains there is magic lamp inside and Aladdin should only steal it, leaving the rest of the treasure behind. But while inside, Aladdin is too tempted by the dazzling gold and steals a handful of coins, unknowingly sealing the cave shut. Alone and afraid, he accidentally rubs the lamp and releases a magical Genie which can grant him three wishes. The wishes have limitations and the Genie cannot grant anything related to murder, romance, bringing back the dead or wishing
for more wishes.

Aladdin uses his first wish to become a prince

Aladdin and the Genie escape the cave and Aladdin uses his first wish to become a prince, planning to return to Agrabah and court Princess Jasmine properly. Taking the name “Prince Ali of Abwaba”, Aladdin returns to the castle with a huge parade of wealth. Jasmine is uninterested in the new prince, but Jafar is suspicious of Prince Ali (Aladdin) and tells him to visit Jasmine in her rooms. Aladdin takes Jasmine for magic carpet ride and Jasmine recognizes him as the handsome boy she met on the street. Aladdin lies and says he truly is a prince, and sometimes dresses as commoner just as she did. She agrees to marry him and kisses him goodnight.

Jafar has Aladdin arrested for entering Jasmine’s rooms and he is put in the dungeon, but Aladdin uses his second wish to escape. The Sultan blesses Jasmine’s and Prince Ali’s (Aladdin’s) plan to marry and starts to announce it to the public. But Jafar has stolen the lamp and uses it to announce Aladdin’s true identity. Jafar uses his first wish to imprison Jasmine and his second to make himself Sultan. Aladdin remembers the limitations to the wish granting and tricks Jafar into asking for unmatched power as a genie. His wish is granted but he is sucked into a lamp, bound to granting wishes and unable to take over the kingdom. Aladdin uses his final wish to free the Genie and declares his love for Jasmine. The Sultan recognizes Aladdin’s courage and decides to accept their marriage even though he is not royalty. The Genie departs for a much needed vacation as Aladdin and Jasmine fly into the night on their magic carpet.

A familiar story based on the original 1992 Disney animated film, this Broadway production brings to life a story full of adventure with extravagant visuals and memorable songs. Aladdin sweeps the audience into another world where wishes are granted and unlikely heroes are discovered.
